Local company reminds everyone to take advantage of savings when buying disaster supplies.
Hurricane season is less than a week away. In advance of the 2022 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday (May 28-June 10, 2022), Bunnell-based hurricane shutter company, Smart Guard Shutters, urges Flagler County residents to take advantage of the tax savings when purchasing items for your hurricane/disaster kit.
“We want our community to be prepared for hurricanes in all aspects of their homes not just covering their windows and doors,” said Kaleigh Rickard, owner of Smart Guard Shutters:
When maintaining or creating a hurricane/disaster kit, first, residents should determine what they would need to survive on their own for several days. This includes food, water, and other supplies. Ready.gov provides information on basic Emergency supplies including:
- Water (one gallon per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation)
- Food (at lease a several -day supply of non-perishable food, also for pets)
- Battery-Powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert.
- First aid kit
- Extra Batteries
- Whistle (to signal for help)
- Dust Mask (to help Filter contaminated air)
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
- Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
- Manual can opener (for food)
- Local Maps
- Cell phone with charger and a backup battery

Some examples of tax-free items during the holiday will include: flashlights and lanterns costing $40 or less; radios costing $50 or less; tarps costing $100 or less; coolers costing $60 or less; batteries costing $50 or less; smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and carbon monoxide detectors costing $70 or less; and, generators costing $1,000 or less. The holiday also includes a number of items related to the safe evacuation of household pets.
Since you do not know where you will be when an emergency occurs you should prepare supplies for your home, work, and even your vehicles. Richard Rickard, Owner of Smart Guard Shutters stated “Now would also be a great time for everyone to ensure that their shutters are working properly or look into getting shutters if they have not already. If you have shutters, you should open/close and clean the shutters at least once every 6 months if inland or 3 months if oceanside, and lubricate the tracks with a dry lube spray.”
